A cup of tea and a listening ear can change a child's life.
When you think about the most important years of a child’s development, you often think about nutrition or education. But there’s something far more fundamental: the well-being of the parent.
Being a mum or dad can be lonely, frustrating, and truly overwhelming. When a parent is experiencing stress—be it due to illness, financial pressure, or social isolation—it can profoundly impact their ability to cope and, in turn, affect their child’s development. Our work is rooted in the idea that when a parent is supported, their child thrives.
The Power of Simple Support
At Home-Start North and West Gloucestershire, our support is unique because it’s volunteer-led and home-based. It’s not about professional intervention; it’s about offering a kind, non-judgmental presence — a friendly face for a few hours a week. Our volunteers, who are often parents themselves, simply listen, help with practical tasks, or play with the children, all while building a trusting relationship.
The evidence behind this simple approach is incredible. Written evidence submitted by Home-Start UK in 2017 to a parliamentary inquiry highlighted the powerful long-term impact of this support. The report* noted that mothers receiving Home-Start’s volunteer-led support made significant progress in their parenting competence.
Even more strikingly:
“At a three year follow up the children of these parents had fewer behaviour problems. A further study subsequently showed these effects were sustained at a 10 year follow up.”
Think about that. Your time as a volunteer today creates a ripple effect that contributes to a child’s resilience and happiness for a decade or more. You’re not just helping a family through a tough patch; you’re building a foundation for their future.
If you would like to make a huge difference to the lives of children and parents in your community we’d love to hear from you. Find out more about volunteering here and contact us today.
